Used in the context of search engines. If a hyper link (clickable text) on a page contained a certain word, then it is possible that the subject matter of he destination page may be connected to this word. For example if 10,000 different web pages contain the hyperlink cricket, all pointing at the same place, then you can bet this page would be a very important with respect to 'cricket'.
This idea was pioneered by Google (www.google.com) which is the search engine of choice for most informed web users. This is not the only criteria Google uses but it helps quality sites appear higher in results based purely on merit and relevance. Google supplies results to many other search engines such as AOL, BBC and Yahoo.
